International Women's Day 2022

Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow

It's that time of the year again when women are celebrated, internationally. But the question arises, why only one day to celebrate women? Shouldn’t they be celebrated every day?

Women are the real architects of society - Harriet Beecher Stowe

She is not wrong. Women are an integral part of society. Women have the power and ability to create and nurture communities. That is why they are a force to reckon with. However, they are subjugated in a world dominated by men. Isn’t it time the trend changed?

On International Women’s Day why not make it a day to propagate gender equality?

Gender equality brings women at par with men so that they are recognised, lauded and praised for their hard work, just like men are. Gender equality today can convert into a sustainable future tomorrow where women are not looked down upon. And how do we bring about this gender equality?

Here are a few points to consider –

Pay equality

The gender pay gap is a very common problem that Indian women face. According to a 2019 study * called the Monster Salary Index, Indian women earned 19% less than men. This is a problem that needs to be addressed soon. Women put in the same effort (sometimes even more) as men and still they are not compensated equally. So, this Women’s Day, if this issue is addressed, it would have a far-reaching impact on gender equality.

Motivating women leaders

Many women have the quality and calibre to reach great heights. Take the instance of Oprah Winfrey, Mother Teresa or Falguni Nayar, each a stalwart in their respective fields. All it takes for them to shine is a little motivation. So, pledge to motivate the women in your family or society so that they can realise their true potential.

Return to work after maternity

Pregnancy and childbirth are important milestones in women’s lives. However, for working women, it leads to a disruption in their careers. Many women quit the workforce after having a baby. Why?

Women are multitaskers and having a baby should not put a dent in their career. The corporate world should, therefore, make it easier and smoother for women to join the workforce even after maternity leave.

Sharing the load

When it comes to managing and running the household, women hold the reins and also all the responsibility, even when they are working. But is the responsibility theirs alone?

No, it isn’t. Every family member should share the load to give a breather to women juggling multiple batons at the same time.

You might not change the world's perspective towards women in a single day. However, you can start. A step today can become a successful journey tomorrow.
So, take the first step. Start by recognising and applauding the women around you. Consider the aforementioned points, act on them and make it a better world for women so that the next Women’s Day would be worth celebrating.
